5 Ways to Impress Judges at Team Tryouts
Judges start judging the minute you take your first step
into the audition room. Don’t let that freak you out! Instead, use it your
advantage. After all, first impressions are everything!
Here are five easy tips (in no particular order) that will
help ensure you get a second glace from judges at team tryouts:
1.
Make
eye contact. Ok, don’t be weird,
though. When you take your first step into the room, look at the judges’ table
and give a friendly smile or nod. Acknowledge them. They’re humans, too! Even while
dancing, give a smile in their direction. Don’t stare them down… be warm and
friendly! J
2.
Stand
proud. When you’re standing for evaluation or in between performing the
audition routine, smile and stand tall! Roll your shoulders back and down, send
your chest forward, and lift your chin high. It shows confidence!
3.
Recover
like a boss. Mess-ups happen. It comes with the territory. But it’s not
about the fact that you made a mistake, it’s about how you recover from the
mistake. Fall? Get back up and keep it
moving! Forget the choreography? In the words of Dory, just keep swimming
(dancing) until you get to a familiar spot! Don’t let a stumble ruin your
performance or your confidence.
4.
Nail
your timing. Knowing the choreography is one thing, but staying on top of
the music and hitting every little accent can turn a “maybe” into an
“absolutely”! Listen to your music and do mental rehearsals where you imagine
yourself matching every move to its beat.
5.
Have fun! I mean, duh! But seriously, perform like you
are having the time of your life! It’s not only fun for you, but it’s fun for
the judges! Try to avoid the plastered on smile with lifeless eyes. Change up
your faces, keep your energy up, and, of course, leave it all on the dance
floor!
